About Me

Hi! I am Chelsea Wick. I am a motivated and creative teacher professional, with a passion for writing and media. When the pandemic hit, I decided to make the career move that would define me - to retrain as a Secondary Teacher. This has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My educational philosophy is centred on putting student needs first. It is the role of an effective teacher to not only teach all of the content in the class’ curriculum, but to do so in a way informed by how students best work and learn on both an individual and class level. It is every student’s right to feel safe and heard in the classroom, in order to truly flourish in their learning journeys, and it is for the teacher to facilitate a space of diversity and inclusion by setting up rules and expectations founded on respect for all. Communication is key to education, and the involvement of students, teachers, and their parental guardians in achieving the same goals form a triangle of key stakeholders. Learning must not only occur within the classroom, but also must be supported from and at home, and valued by the individual student. Through the shared motivation by all three parties, guided by the teacher, success can and will be achieved. True learning occurs when there is collaboration between teachers and staff members, and when teachers are as focused on improving themselves for the betterment of their students as they are on raising test scores. I am skilled in Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Editing, Writing, Public Relations, video production, graphic design, and end-to-end Social Media management.

I have a Master of Teaching (Secondary) from the Australian Catholic University (ACU), and a Bachelor's degree in Media and Communications from the University of Sydney. My specialty in education is English, while my majors as part of my Bachelor's degree were in English, and Film Studies. I also studied subjects in the Religion, and Cultural Studies departments. I began my Masters of Teaching (secondary) with a double major in English at the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in 2020, commencing in Semester 2. This is a choice that makes so much sense for me, as I immediately began to miss teaching when I finished being a swimming teacher, as well as so many aspects of English and Film Studies from high school and university that simply do not come up in the corporate world. I started casual teaching at the end of 2021, and I started as a permanent member of staff at St Luke's Catholic College in 2022. I am excited to make a positive change in the lives of students, and assist them in their learning journeys.

My career so far has been an exciting and diverse journey. Before I decided to be a teacher, I worked in Sydney's CBD as a corporate media professional. My last corporate role was Product Marketing Assistant at OnlyLuxe Travel based in Barangaroo. Onlyluxe Travel is focused on bringing the most unique and luxurious adventures to life. Australian-owned, Onlyluxe Travel is fast positioning itself as one of the leading luxury adventure businesses in the country, with the aim to take clients beyond, to ignite their imagination and to transform the amazing journeys into a lifetime of memorable experiences. In my role, I conducted marketing activities in line with brand positioning, and prepared and collated product information and marketing for sales and the company website. I researched, developed and implemented Digital Marketing initiatives, planned, collated and distributed content for B2B & B2C eDMs and social media channels, and assisted in researching, planning and executing advertising & PR opportunities. Travel writing had its unique challenges, but it was exciting to use my communication skills to inspire customers to make their travel dreams come true. By using language to paint vivid images of the destinations we had to offer, I was able to connect with customers, and enable them to make unforgettable travel arrangements.

My role prior to that was Customer Experience Content Specialist at RateCity.com.au, a financial comparison site. In this role, I led the growth of the RateCity customer base into a large and active community. I planned, produced and published quality content for our users. Content that was of interest, engaged and educated; to help RateCity's customers make better financial decisions. Using HubSpot, I created EDMs including HTML custom design work, carried out end to end analysis for our communications, including emails and social media posts, lead management, and made customer journey workflows. I collaborated closely across the whole business, and in particular with the content, marketing and product teams, and the PR and sales teams for sponsored client pieces. I conducted extensive research of the brand’s audience, their competitors and similar companies overseas, and built a plan for a social media reinvigoration and starting up on new platforms. I also planned to build a community hub onsite.

Prior to this, I was the Media and Communications Coordinator at Women in Banking and Finance (WiBF), a not for profit organisation focused on supporting the career development of women in the Banking and Finance sector. In this position, I was in charge of all internal and external communications for WiBF, from designing marketing materials including and not limited to flyers, original graphics  for social media, brochures, and member information packs. I additionally produced videos for promotional and informational purposes. I created and enforced a uniform branded aesthetic, wrote copy for documents, mass emails via Salesforce, member enquiries, and regular periodic EDM campaigns  via Mailchimp. I also helped design the new WiBF website (live April 2019), and was responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.

In 2018, I completed a 3 month Marketing Internship at Arxxus Technology Partners, a Salesforce third party company, focused on setting up and supporting clients with Salesforce integration into their businesses. Primarily, I helped create the new Arxxus website, researched and implemented branding and engagement strategies. I organised inhouse events and promotional material. I also performed several detailed  audits of the old Arxxus website, and those of our competitors in order to generate constructive marketing analysis reports. I was also responsible for editing content for clarity, tone, and grammar, as well as collating ideas into professional presentations for the company’s executives, customers, and partners such as designers and writers that  the company used as outsourced assets. I also helped shape the future of Arxxus’ online profile through creating plans for improving their existing presence on LinkedIn, and Twitter, as well as forming strategies for using platforms they have never used including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat.

In 2017, I completed a 4 month internship at FilmInk, Australia’s Premier online movie magazine. I was a Writer & Public Relations Consultant and under the supervision of the editor and chief, Dov Kornits. I helped organise in house as well as promotional events and screenings, and to boost the company’s presence on social media platforms. Every week, my work in the form of film reviews, news stories, social media posts, and interviews were published. I have 18 published pieces as part of my portfolio.

From 2014 to 2019, I was also a Learn to Swim Instructor, where I taught people from ages 6 months to 89 years old (my oldest and youngest students). These years were so valuable in learning how to be the teacher in a learning environment, and how to tailor teaching approaches to individual needs. While I am partial to a swim, the greatest thing about being a Swimming Teacher was helping my students learn and grow, and making my class something for them to look forward to each week.

Over the years, I believed I was a lot of things, but in truth I really was just doing a lot of things. While each of these experiences have shaped the person I am today, I now know what I am, and what role I play in this world, and that is to be an educator. I have always loved being a writer, and I am happiest when I am writing about my passions and experiences. In this website, I will share my thoughts as I embark on my career as a teacher, various writing projects including film criticism, and articles about art, lifestyle, and professional tips and tricks I have discovered (and am discovering) in my professional journey.

In addition to sharing my personal interest projects with you, I am also a freelance media and communications professional. I can be a copywriter, editor, social media strategist, graphic designer, video producer, and advise on how to boost the Customer Experience (CX) in your business, through relevant and engaging communication.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE MADE THIS WEBSITE ALONG WITH ALL IT'S PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL MYSELF! I have not outsourced anything in the production and maintenance of my site. Please view everything you see here as an exemplar of what I can do!

I also enjoy conversing in Japanese, and I am also learning Korean and my spoken Korean is getting a little stronger every day. If English is your second language, I would love to connect with you as I work towards becoming multi-lingual. To make my site the most accessible for this purpose, it is also available in Korean language.

Thank you for being here! Making my own website has been something I have wanted to do for a long time.

Kindest regards,

Miss Chelsea Wick
